YES ON 2B FOR BUILDING A BETTER LOVELAND
LOVELAND, Colo. – October 1, 2009 – By voting YES on ballot issue 2B this fall, voters of the city of Loveland, Colo., will show their support for a 3 percent lodging tax to visitors to be used for bolstering visitor awareness of the diverse city and ultimately driving local business growth. John Q. Hammons’ new eight-story, 263-suite Embassy Suites® – Loveland Hotel, Spa & Conference Center at 4705 Clydesdale Parkway in Loveland is actively supporting the 2B initiative being promoted by the “Building a Better Loveland” campaign. A lodging tax is typically the standard in the cities in which hotel industry leader John Q. Hammons Hotels & Resorts does business. The Springfield, Mo.-based company’s operations span 25 states and include more than 80 upscale, full-service hotels, resorts and suites and 5.4 gross million square feet of meeting space, including the luxury Embassy Suites Loveland Hotel, Spa & Conference Center, which opened in April of this year.
“About 98 percent of the cities in which John Q. Hammons Hotels & Resorts operates have passed a lodging tax on visitor stays, enabling these visionary communities to generate marketing dollars earmarked specifically for attracting additional outside business that benefits a range of local merchants and services,” said Scott Tarwater, executive vice president of development for John Q. Hammons Hotels & Resorts. “A lodging tax on visitor hotel room stays just makes good business sense, especially when charting a community growth plan. We have significant first-hand experience witnessing these tax dollars at work and positively impacting communities nationwide.”
The “Building a Better Loveland” grassroots campaign funded by area Loveland businesses in support of issue 2B is proactively educating city of Loveland voters on the proposed lodging tax, its revenue potential, and allocation and management of tax funds to be used exclusively for promoting tourism, conventions and related activities, ultimately driving business to create and sustain jobs. The first of a direct mail series dropped to more than 11,000 households this week, with two more mailers slated for October. The mailers reinforce that the lodging tax would NOT be directed at citizens of Loveland; the lodging tax would be paid for by visitors to Loveland occupying hotel rooms. “As the largest hotel north of Denver to Canada, we see the potential that driving additional business can have for the city of Loveland,” said Tom Dwyer, general manager, Embassy Suites – Loveland Hotel, Spa & Conference Center. “It’s an established economic formula within the hospitality industry that each convention dollar typically generates seven times the spend in a market before it departs. Visitors require food, retail goods and services from the local area. A lodging tax would provide the dollars needed to support advertising and marketing to additional meeting planners to bring more business to Loveland and to build the community for the long term.”
